This month is a season for spider fighting, a recreational activity for young filipino kids and a gambler's alternative for cockfighting.
During nighttime, young boys searches for spiders in trees, warehouses, bushes and other places. Each spider caught are then housed in matchboxes.
Priced fighters are starved before the fight to add ferocity.
The fight begins when the two spiders are placed at each end of the stick, usually bukog(midribs of coconut leaves), then manipulated until they wrestle each other. The first one to drop his opponent three times, kill or wrap, wins the fight.
