Aswang

Iloilo was on alert when townsfolk of Lawigan, San Juaquin claimed that their town was visited by Aswang. It started when two siblings claimed that seven mysterious beings, dressed like priests and with big red eyes, attempted to abduct them. Some witnesses claimed to have seen them jumping around while holding hand in hand.

A Parish Priest said that these evil-like beings might have visited their town because local residents are so preoccupied worldly things that they forgot about God. He also said that people must always pray and go to mass to ward off these evil beings.

Some people say that these stories were all made up by the people of the church in order for them to have more followers and support them in their plans of building a new church in the said town.

Some people say that these are just made up stories to keep children off the streets and stay home at night.

What are Aswangs?

Aswang is one of the well-known mythical creature in the Philippines. It is most popular in the Western Visayas Region such as Capiz, Aklan, Iloilo, Antique, Negros and Guimaras. Thi is the region where most people say the Aswang came from.

Aswangs are regular people, shy and quiet, during the day and transforms into creatures at night. They are very elusive. They have bloodshot eyes as a result of staying all night to find victims. They are known to have long Proboscises, which they use to suck on wombs of their pregnant victim.

They feed on animals, small children and unborn babies. They loved to eat internal organs especially the heart and the liver.

How to spot an Aswang

· Aswang does not have a Philtrum, the midline groove in the upper lip that runs from the top of the lip to the nose.

· You will see your reflection in their eyes as Upside Down.

· You can see their true form when you bend over viewing them in a head-between-legs position.

· If you bring “na orasyonan nga Lana” (special oil extracted from boiled and decanted coconut meat and mixed with certain plant stems upon which special prayers being said) with you, it tends to boil whenever an Aswang is around you and boils harder when it is near you. It only stops boiling when the Aswang leaves.

Types of Aswang

Mananangal - a half witch and vampiric bat-like creature that takes the form of either an old or beautiful woman. During the full moon, the Mananangal would go to a secluded area to split itself into half, upper torso and head, and it separates itself from its lower half and hunt for victims..

Bagat/Shapeshifters - An aswang who has the ability to change from a human into a wild pig, a cat or the most popular a dog.

Tik-Tik- its name is derived from the sound it makes, it is louder the further away the aswang is, to confuse its potential victim.

Balbal/Cadaver Stealers - the aswang who will try and change out the real corpse with a fake corpse made from the trunk of trees, usually a banana tree.

Mangkukulam/Mambabarang- a Vindictive Hexer or Voodoo who lives in secluded areas.

How to Deal with Aswang

Ikog-Pagi or stingray's tails is the most popular weapon of choice for aswang hunters. Whipping aswang with Ikog-Pagi will drive them away or kill them.

Silver bullets and swords. The myth of silver weapons warding off evil creatures is probably taken from western mythology.

Throwing salt at aswangs is also said to cause their skin to burn. This belief may stem from the purifying powers attributed to salt crystals by various traditions of witchcraft. In the case of Mananagal, It is said if one finds its torso, to either sprinkle salt or sand on its lower half body or burn it, making it impossible for the creature to revert/ transform and would die upon the first rays of sunlight.

Throwing semen at aswang is also said to irritate them. Along with semen, phallic objects are supposed to make the aswang terrified.

Red pouch full of ginger and coins is another way for dealing with aswangs. The ginger will keep them away while the coins are used for preventing them from lifting you up.

This month is a season for spider fighting, a recreational activity for young filipino kids and a gambler's alternative for cockfighting.

During nighttime, young boys searches for spiders in trees, warehouses, bushes and other places. Each spider caught are then housed in matchboxes.

Priced fighters are starved before the fight to add ferocity.

The fight begins when the two spiders are placed at each end of the stick, usually bukog(midribs of
coconut leaves), then manipulated until they wrestle each other. The first one to drop his opponent three times, kill or wrap, wins the fight.

UFC 117 Preview

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will bring us "UFC 117: Silva vs Sonnen" on August 7, 2010 at Oracle Arena Oakland, California. After all the verbal wars between these two fighters, everything will be settled in the Octagon where the real fight will happen. The fight will show if who can back up all that comes out of his mouth. Will it be Anderson "the Spider" Silva, The reigning Middleweight Champion and the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world. Or will it be the number one ranked Middleweight challenger Chael Sonnen.

These event will also feature an exciting and interesting undercard.

UFC 117 Fight Card

Anderson Silva versus Chael Sonnen
UFC Middleweight Championship

These is a very interesting match up between a striker and a wrestler. Will Silva still reign supreme or will there be an upset in and Sonnen will be the new middleweight champion.

Anderson "the Spider" Silva is the most dominating fighter in the history of the UFC. He is unbeaten in the UFC winning 11 fights with 9 wins KO or Submission. His striking skills is beyond great, fast and accurate. He is very hard to take down and dangerous when on the ground for he has an excellent Jui-jitsu skills for he trains under the Nougiera brothers. Showboating may be the negative side in Silva's game.

For a young UFC career, Chael Sonnen impressed UFC President Dana White and made him the number one contender in the middleweight division. He is a great wrestler. Very relentless in his attacks, takedowns and ground game. He seems to walk through pain and hard to knockout. He is very confident that he will defeat Anderson Silva and walk home with the Championship belt.

Jon Fitch versus Thiago Alves

These is a much awaited rematch between these two Welterweight contenders. A win is important for both in order to claim a championship rematch against Georges St. Pierre. The first fight was very lopsided for Jon Fitch dominated Thiago Alves through his ground game. The time Alves got out from the ground he was knocked out from to devastating upkicks by Fitch.

Jon Fitch holds one of the best records inside the octagon with 12-1, only loss is with GSP for the welterweight championship. He has a great work ethic and comes to the octagon with a great game plan. He will definitely use his superior ground game against Thiago Alves for him to win this match.

They wont call him "Pitbull" for nothing. Thiago Alves is one of the best strikers in the UFC today. He can knockout anybody with his lethal kicks and powerful punches. His last fight was last July 2009 against GSP where he lost and was sidelined for brain irregularity.

Junior Dos Santos versus Roy Nelson
These two fighters are great contenders in the heavyweight division. A win will put them up a rank in the heavyweight contender ladder. Both of them have a knockout power and a good ground game. Expect a knockout from this fight.

The former IFL fighter and TUF Heavyweights winner, Roy Nelson had been so impressive in his MMA career. He has great punching power and is a legit Jui-jitsu practitioner. Don't get fooled, he may look like he just came out of a buffet with his bloated belly but this is the guy you don't want to mess with.

Junior Dos Santos is unbeaten in 5 fights inside the octagon, all wins coming from submission or TKO because of punches. He just don't have great striking skills but also have a good ground game. He is trained by the Nougiera brothers.

Ricardo Almieda versus Matt Hughes
Themed as a grudge match, Ricardo Almieda will try to avenge the loss of his long time master Renzo Gracie to former UFC welterweight Champion Matt Hughes. A fight that will feature Jui-jitsu versus wrestling.

Clay Guida versus Rafael Dos Anjos
Clay Guida has always been a fan favorite in the UFC for had great fights inside the octagon. He is very energetic and moves forward even if hurt. Rafael Dos Anjos is a composed ground specialist.

Early winners and losers in the NBA : free agency, trades and draft picks

After a great 2009-2010 season, the NBA is going through a busy off-season. Team owners and management are trying their best to rebuild and solidify their teams to become contenders. Teams that missed the playoffs were given a chance at the lottery to have early picks at the Draft. Some cleared off salary-cap space for them to acquire superstar free agents. Some traded players to other teams and some just re-signed current players. Teams are all looking forward to make great deals through the off-season. Some might gain and some might lose. Here is a list of early winners and losers through the middle of the 2010 NBA off-season.

WINNERS

NEW YORK KNICKS
The Knicks had been clearing off salary-cap for the past 2 seasons. Unlike their neighbors the NewJersey Nets, losing their bid in acquiring Lebron James, the Knicks went on to do Plan B.

First they traded their best player in David Lee to the Golden State warriors for hard working role players Ronnie Turiaf, Kelenna Azubuike and Anthony Randolph.

They also acquired one of the best available free agents, Standing Tall And Talented, Amar'e Stoudemire.

Their rookie pick Landry Sanders and 2nd-year point guard Toney Douglas made a great impression in the Summer League .

Expect a new and improve New York Knicks for the next season.

WASHINGTON WIZARDS
From the stupid incident involving Gilbert Arenas that got him suspended for the remainder of the season to losing Deshawn Stevenson, Caron Butler and Brendan Haywood to trades, 2009-2010 must be the worst season for the Washington Wizards.

They were lucky this off-season by having the chance to pick the best player in the Draft in John Wall. He had been impressive in his young NCAA career and proved that he is the real deal by leading the Summer League in Points and Assists.

They acquired Kirk Hinrich from the Bulls. He will be a great backup for the already good backcourt of the Wizards. His high basketball IQ will help John Wall through his NBA start.

They also acquired, chinese superstar, Yi Jianlian to solidify their frontcourt. Nick Young and JaVale Mcgee showed lots of improvement in the Summer League.

LOS ANGELES LAKERS
Winning Back-to-Back Championship is not enough for Black Mamba and his gang. Their starting line up is still intact.

They acquired backup point guard Steve Blake, veterans Matt Barnes and Theo Ratliff. They also consider signing their late draft picks Derrick Caracter and Devin Ebanks who had a terrific Summer League.

Kobe Bryant and Andrew Bynum just had operations on their respective injuries but said that they are ready for the upcoming preseason games.

The only thing left now is for them to convince Phil Jackson to comeback and help them win their third straight title and Jackson's 4th three-peat!

MIAMI HEAT
The City of Miami is the sure winner this off-season. They cleared their salary cap for them to acquire 3 max players.

First, they re-signed their superstar Dwyane Wade then acquired perennial all-star Chris Bosh. The most awaited decision of this free agency season went to the Heat when the King, Lebron James, announced that he will be joining Wade and Bosh at Miami. This is arguably the best trio ever in the history of the NBA.

Re-signing role players Udonis haslem, Jamaal Magloire, Carlos Arroyo and Joel Anthony will give depth to their team.

They also acquired sharp shooter Mike Miller, veterans Zydrunas Ilgauskas and former 100million man Juwan Howard.

Other Notable Winners:

Chicago Bulls
Acquisitions- Carlos Boozer, Kyle Korver, Ronnie Brewer, C.J Watson and Kurt Thomas
Loss-Brad Miller, Hakim Warrick and Kirk Hinrich

Phoenix Suns
Acquisitions-Gani Lawal(rookie), Josh Childress, Hedo Turkuglo and Hakim Warrick
Loss- Amar'e Stoudemire.

LOSERS

NEW JERSEY NETS
Mikhail Prokhorov, the owner of the New Jersey Nets promised to rebuild the Nets when he bought the franchise. Yes, they had cleared their salary cap and chased for big names in the free agent market, but got nothing out of it.

Their 3rd overall pick these draft, Derrick Favors, was so inconsistent during their 5-game Summer League Appearance.

They traded Yi Jianlian and Chris Douglas-Roberts, two of their hardworking players.

All they acquired were Jordan Farmar, Anthony Morrow, Travis Outlaw, Johan Petro and Quinton Ross. They are good players but not as what New Jersey fans had been wishing for their team.

CLEVELAND CAVALIERS
The Biggest Loser of them all, Dan Gilbert (Cavs owner) and the City of Cleveland!

Lebron James' decision of living Cleveland made him "from hero to public enemy number one". After lebron, Zydrunas Ilgauskas also joined him at Miami.

The Cavs has been one of the best team in the NBA for the past 5 years. They have been one of the early favorites to win the championship. With the King gone, how could they retain their form as contenders in the East if not for the championship.

Other Notable Losers:

Toronto Raptors- lost Hedo Turkuglo and Chris Bosh

New Orleans Hornets- have not completed re-signing Peja Stojakovic and on the brink of losing Chris Paul.

They might be winners or losers but its just midway through the off-season. There is still time to secure some good acquisitions.

The real season have not even started.

This makes fans get hyped up for the upcoming season. questions and doubts will soon be answered.

Fallen Stars..

In preparation for the upcoming 2010-2011 NBA Season, teams have been busy filling up their line-ups. Team executives have been tracking down and signing players from arguably the best free agent market ever. Miami Heat made the best move by clearing up their salary cap and signing the so called ¨Super Friends¨ Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and Lebron James.

The NBA will also welcome the new batch of rookies, like John Wall, Evan Turner, DeMarcus Cousins, Derrick Favors and Gordon Hayward, that will try to make a name for themsleves.

Through all the hype surrounding league, many fans forgot about some of the aging free agents that had been in the league for some time. These players had been in player trades, controversies and battling injuries. Fans might say that they should retire for them to end their career on a high note but these players ego still tells them that they can still play.

Aging players are usually drawn to sign for a championship bound teams for them to end their career as champions.

Notable Aging Free Agents:

Allen Iverson- "The Answer". As his nickname says, yes he is the answer to the Philadephia 76ers' problems when they drafted this gifted player. His quickness and crossover moves made him hard to defend. He became the smallest NBA MVP, only at 6'0". He also is a trendsetter, with a gangster image, cornrows hairstyle and arm sleeves. Iverson was filled with controversies throughout his career. His ego is so big that critics always tags him as uncoachable and not a team player. Rumor has it that the Miami Heat in not contented with their Superfriends and company that they are in negotiations with the Answer.

Shaquille O'neal- These 7'2" Future Hall of famer, former MVP, 4-time Champ, 18 year veteran still wants to play. Now he's the one chasing Kobe Bryant's 5 rings for he often said before that Kobe couldnt do it wthout him. Maybe its time for him to pass the torch to the new "Superman" in Dwight Howard. He has nothing else to prove. Go home and plant Kamote.

Tracy Mcgrady- A prolific scorer who lead the league in scoring in a season. Who could ever forget the game against the San Antonio Spurs in which he scored 13 points(four consecutive 3´s) in the last 33 seconds of the game. He is just like his cousin Vince Carter. Athleticism and highlight plays gave him a name in the NBA. Its is rumored that the two winningest teams in the NBA, the Celtics and Lakers are battling to acquire the services of T-mac.

Juwan Howard- Before he was drafted to the NBA, he was part of the Michigan "Fab Five" with Chris Webber and Jalen Rose. He had a stellar start on his NBA career and became an allstar in 1996. He became the 1st NBA player ever to sign a 100 million dollar deal. Many fans were disappointed and even booed him in home games for his mediocre performance.

Michael Finley- A great scorer and a former slam-dunk champion, Michael Finley was one of the most exciting players to watch in his career. He can shoot and drive to the basket, an offensive threat. After being traded by the Dallas Mavericks, his career went into a slump. He rarely even play on last years playoff games with the Boston Celtics.

Penny Hardaway- He was a superstar back in the 90's where he teamed up with Shaq in Orlando. After several injury plagued season and player trades. He decided to hang his jersey on 2008. Now, he is making talks to the Miami Heat executives for a possible comeback and a chance for him to be part of a championship team.
